Tata Nexon iCNG

The Tata Nexon iCNG concept has been showcased at the 2024 Bharat Mobility Expo in New Delhi, ahead of its upcoming launch in the market. Since its introduction in 2017, the Nexon has been incredibly popular, with over six lakh units sold. It is currently available in both traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) variants. Boasting a five-star safety rating from Global NCAP, the Nexon is renowned for its affordability. Tata has consistently expanded the Nexon lineup to maintain customer interest, including major updates, special editions, and the addition of new features.

To further broaden its powertrain options, Tata has introduced the Nexon iCNG at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2024. The expo, which commenced today, features the Tata Nexon iCNG along with other latest models and concepts such as the Curvv and Harrier EV. Leveraging the success of the recently facelifted Nexon, Tata has incorporated twin-cylinder technology, first seen in the Altroz and Punch at the 2023 Auto Expo.

In January 2022, Tata introduced iCNG technology with the Tiago and Tigor models. However, the debut of India’s first twin-cylinder iCNG technology in the Nexon has garnered significant attention due to its ability to maintain boot space. The Tata Nexon iCNG Concept is the country’s inaugural car equipped with turbo twin-cylinder technology while offering usable boot space. The presence of an underbody spare wheel contributes to the vehicle’s practicality, with the boot space measuring approximately 230 liters. The parallel alignment of the dual cylinders provides a 60-litre capacity (water equivalent). The cylinders are neatly tucked away thanks to underfloor boot storage, keeping them invisible, while the tool kits are stored alongside them.

Tata asserts that the Tata Nexon iCNG delivers enhanced driveability and effortless performance in various terrains, even at high altitudes. It offers better low-end torque and improved calibration. The factory-fitted CNG system includes a micro switch, advanced materials to prevent leakage, and features thermal incident protection and leak detection capabilities.

Through clever packaging, the load floor safeguards the cylinders, valves, and pipes, while the system is designed to withstand rear impacts. The Tata Nexon iCNG also boasts a six-point cylinder mounting scheme, a single advanced electronic control unit (ECU) to facilitate quick switching between CNG and petrol modes, direct start in CNG mode, automatic fuel switch-over, faster refueling with NGV1 universal type nozzle, and a modular fuel filter.
